Overview

The Developer of Learning, Experience and Programming is responsible for the development and implementation of school and teacher programs that support OMCA’s brand as a museum, garden and gathering place and advance its social impact of building trust, understanding, and connection between people and communities. The position develops a range of offerings in collaboration with OMCA staff, volunteers, and community partners that connect K-12 school audiences to the Museum’s exhibitions, core galleries, and collections. The position works in partnership with a unit of Program Managers and Program Developers who work cross-functionally and support a cohesive slate of programming, learning, and experience activities

INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to and support the OMCA strategic plan, annual priorities, and institutional initiatives;

  • Participate in a culture of ongoing learning, collaboration, innovation, creativity, and community engagement.
  • All positions will have core functional responsibilities, cross functional team activation and learning and development as a core function of each role.



DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Development & Implementation 

  • Develop and implement education programs and resources for K-12 students and teachers that explore, deepen, and amplify themes and stories drawn from Museum exhibitions and collections, contribute directly to the Museum’s strategic and social impact goals, and foster deep community relationships.
  • Support the development of new models of participatory and learner-centered programs based on research, evaluation, and understanding of visitors’ diverse learning needs.
  • In consultation with the Learning, Experience and Programming Manager, create project plans with rationale and audience outcomes, implementation and evaluation plans, and budgets. 
  • Research and collaboratively develop cross-disciplinary program curricula and education resources, leveraging the Museum’s exhibitions, collections, and digital resources.
  • Work alongside Museum volunteers and other members of the School Programs Team to offer culturally responsive and inquiry-based K-12 school programs, ensuring program quality, coverage, and support for volunteers.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of training for volunteers and staff, including culturally responsive museum education practices, dialogue and inquiry-based interpretive strategies, youth development, and state and national standards.
  • Coordinate projects, including managing the timeline, development, expenses, and coordination of volunteers and staff supporting individual programs.
  • Work directly with gallery and exhibition project teams to manage internal stakeholder input, brainstorm and identify school audience opportunities, community collaborations, and subject expertise.
  • Develops relationships, communicates, and collaborates with other Museum teams (such as Design, Marketing and Communications, Facilities and Security, Visitor Experience, Development) and Bay Area K-12 education partners on exhibition opportunities and school audience offerings.
  • Identify, contract, and manage external program collaborators that deepen the museum’s education and civic engagement, and broaden participation of diverse communities.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate school program volunteers and interns, creating an inclusive team environment.

 

Research & Evaluation

  • Incorporate visitor research and evaluation findings—both from OMCA and the broader field—into exhibition and programming projects.
  • Collaborate with evaluators to develop and execute formative, front end, remedial, and summative evaluation of programs.
  • Maintain accurate program data and contribute to program reports for fundraising and donor stewardship.
  • Keep abreast of best and next practices in the field of museum education to inform OMCA school programs and share results of OMCA research with the field.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years of related experience.
  • B.A. degree in related field preferred.
  • English language proficiency in both spoken and written form; second language (particularly Spanish or Chinese) is desirable. 
  • Experience in program planning and management for school and teacher audiences.
  • Knowledge of California State Standards and Bay Area curriculum priorities.
  • Interest in working across disciplines, with special experience or interest in California history subjects preferred.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and a history of building equitable and inclusive programming.
  • Works well in a deeply collaborative, highly fluid culture.
  • Ability to display and encourage visitor and internal customer service, take and share responsibility and treat others with respect.
  • Knowledge of partnership and contract negotiations and management.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and applications including Google Suite and Asana.

  • Museum environment involves both indoor and outdoor working conditions.
  • Ability to travel between OMCA locations, and other travel as required by position responsibilities.
  • Engage with diverse visitor populations for extended periods of time in the galleries or throughout the campus. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. 
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
